Na canção If it hadn’t been for love, da cantora inglesa Adele, encontramos vários exemplos da chamada Third Conditional, a terceira condicional. É um tipo de frase que expressa algo importantíssimo em qualquer idioma – a causa e a consequência de um fato ocorrido no passado.

Vamos ver como dominar esse tipo de construção?

 

• O que é uma frase condicional?

Há 3 tipos de frases condicionais na língua inglesa. Cada uma faz referência a um tempo – futuro, presente e passado, nessa ordem de dificuldade, sendo que a primeira tem uma subdivisão chamada de Zero Conditional.

Mas a terceira condicional é seguramente a mais difícil para os estudantes brasileiros. Isso é porque ela lida com tempos verbais mais avançados no ensino do idioma – o present perfect e o past perfect, além de suas formas contínuas.

Por exemplo:

If I hadn’t slept so late, I wouldn’t have missed my bus this morning.

(Se eu não tivesse dormido tão tarde, não teria perdido o meu ônibus nesta manhã).

 

E, na canção da Adele:

Never woulda hitch-hiked to Birmingham if it hadn’t been for love.*

(Eu jamais teria ido de carona para Birmingham se não tivesse sido por amor).

 

*lembrando que woulda é uma contração bem coloquial para would have, que, portanto, deve ser evitada em situações formais.

 

• Estrutura

A primeira coisa que devemos entender é que estamos criando condições e hipóteses para acontecimentos do passado:

 

Condição: If she hadn’t taken her medication, she wouldn’t have gotten better so fast. (Se ela não tivesse tomado seu medicamento, ela não teria melhorado tão rápido).

 

Hipótese: If only they had trained a little longer, maybe they would have won the championship. (Se ao menos eles tivessem treinado um pouco mais, talvez eles teriam ganhado o campeonato).

 

Em ambos os casos acima, temos o uso do present perfect (she wouldn’t have gotten better / maybe they would have won the championship) para as frases de consequência.

E o uso do past perfect (if she hadn’t taken her medication / if only they had trained for a little longer) para as frases de causa.

Lembrando que a ordem das frases (causa e consequência ou consequência e causa) não altera a interpretação da sentença.

 

Mas as condicionais podem apresentar outros pontos gramaticais importantes, como a voz passiva (passive voice):

If the manager hadn’t been warned about this issue, this meeting wouldn’t have been scheduled.

(Se o gerente não tivesse sido avisado sobre esse problema, esta reunião não teria sido agendada).

 

• Se eu tivesse praticado mais…

Você não precisa (e nem deve) esperar o seu homework para praticar o third conditional. Aliás, é importante que o inglês seja uma presença constante na sua vida, e você precisa ativamente produzir linguagem para dominar a língua!

Portanto, a dica aqui é: pense em hipóteses e condições relacionadas a eventos passados.

Vamos dar alguns exemplos!

 

• Condições e hipóteses

Pensando nas principais condições para alguns eventos, podemos perguntar o porquê de algo ter ocorrido e chegar a uma conclusão:

Por exemplo: por que o camundongo foi comido pelo gato?

Assim, podemos encontrar que:

– A condição para o camundongo ter sido devorado por um gato foi a de que o camundongo estava distraído. (1)

Ou que:

– A condição para o gato ter comido o camundongo é a de que o gato estava muito faminto. (2)

 

Como já dissemos, a frase da causa é feita com o past perfect – sendo a frase que contém a palavra if (se):

If the mouse hadn’t been distracted… (1)

(Se o camundongo não estivesse destraído…)

If the cat hadn’t been so hungry… (2)

(Se o gato não estivesse tão faminto…)

 

Agora, você cria a consequência, usando o present perfect.

The cat wouldn’t have eaten it (1)

(O gato não o teria comido.)

It wouldn’t have eaten the mouse (2)

(Ele não teria comido o camundongo.)

 

Agora é só juntar, em qualquer ordem:

• If the mouse hadn’t been distracted, the cat wouldn’t have eaten it.
• The cat wouldn’t have eaten the mouse if it hadn’t been so hungry.

Viu só?!

 

E o mesmo funciona para as hipóteses. A pergunta agora pode ser: o que poderia ter acontecido se outra coisa tivesse acontecido antes?

Por exemplo:

• If I had bought the tickets a week before, it would probably have been cheaper.

(Se eu tivesse comprador as passagens uma semana antes, elas provavelmente teriam sido mais baratas).

• If she hadn’t taken a vacation this summer, she might have had a nervous breakdown.

(Se ela não tivesse tirado férias neste verão, talvez tivesse um colapso nervoso).

• If they hadn’t replaced our previous professor with this new guy, maybe we would have handed in the final draft of the project on time.

(Se eles não tivessem substituído nosso professor anterior com esse cara novo, talvez nós tivéssemos entregado o rascunho final do projeto em tempo).

 

Esta é apenas uma introdução ao Third Conditional, mas ela já traz muitas ferramentas para você produzir linguagem por conta própria!
